“Today is Career Day!
I said settle down!”
Yelled Miss Mary McGoo
With her face in a frown.
But nobody settled.
(Much less settled down).
“Come get your assignments
And find out who’s who!”
But nobody listened.
The noise grew and grew.
“This class ... this class ... this class is a zoo!”
Said a fed-up and fuming Miss Mary McGoo.
And it was true.
On top of his desk
Stood Leo P. Cage. [Leo resembles a LION]
His roar shook the walls
(He was loud for his age).
“Come down here young man
And get your job now!
I’ve made you a dentist -- ”
But Leo just growled.
At the back of the room,
Small Iris Onassis,[Iris resembles an OWL]
Was watching the scene
Through Coke-bottle glasses.
“Perhaps,” said Iris,
“It might help to try -- ”
But nobody heard.
Miss McGoo ran on by.
She ran to the fish tank
Where Phillip N. Side, [Phillip resembles a PUFFERFISH]
Had stuck his head in
And puffed his cheeks wide.
“I’ve made you a lawyer.
Now get out of there, please!”
Miss McGoo tried to move him,
But instead made him...
Sneeze.
He soaked the whole room
Like a wave from a pool,
With two parts fish-water
And one part fish-drool.
“Perhaps,” began Iris,
“A job should embrace -- ”
But she was cut-off
When a fish hit her face.
Miss McGoo raced outside
Where reclusive Oz Twitch, [Oz resembles an OSTRICH, in a sandbox]
Was digging head-first
And making a ditch.
“I’ve made you a doctor!
Don’t you understand?”
(But it’s hard to hear
Through an earful of sand.)
“Miss McGoo,” said Iris,
“I think I know how -- ”
“Iris, stop nagging
And get your job now!”
Yelled Mary McGoo,
“I’ve made you an -- ow!” [Miss McGoo gets hit in the head with a pen]
Rap-tap a tip-tap!
Rap-tap a tip-teek!
Went the tap-happy pen
Of Megan Treesweak. [Megan resembles a WOODPECKER]
She tapped on the desks
She tapped on the walls.
And when she had to go...
She tapped on the stalls.
Miss Mary was livid --
“Put that thing away!
I’ve made you a banker!
You’re spoiling the day!”
“I’ve made you a tanker!
You’re oiling the bay!”
Said a mimicking, mocking,
Polly RePlay. [Polly resembles a PARROT]
Polly repeated
Whatever she heard,
Though sometimes (on purpose)
She messed up a word.
Miss McGoo was about
To use her kung fu --
But everyone froze
When a shrill whistle blew.
All heads turned to Iris
In shock and surprise,
That is, except Oz
(He had sand in his eyes).
“Today is Career Day,”
She said to the room,
“And I think I know how
To make us all bloom.”
Iris told them her plan
And, the class, they were game!
She gave them new jobs --
But they all stayed the same:
Leo still roared...
But got standing ovations, [has “ACTOR” sign; is saying, “To be or not to be...”]
While Polly repeated...
For the United Nations. [“INTERPRETER”]
Oz kept on digging...
In a far away land, [“ARCHEOLOGIST”]
And Megan now tapped...
On nails (and her hand), [“CONSTRUCTION WORKER”; band-aid on thumb]
While Phillip puffed out...
His cheeks for the band. [“TUBA PLAYER”]
And Iris? She still taught...
The class to think deeper. [“TEACHER”]
But she also helped out...
As part-time zoo keeper. [“ZOO KEEPER” hat]
Miss McGoo’s eyes were wide,
Her frown was gone, too.
“Like I always said --
This class is a zoo!”
And it was true.
