A Buttertown fire
one summer night,
took one hundred firemen
ten hours to fight.
When the fire was out,
amid all the clutter,
streamed one hundred tons
of sweet melted butter.
It sloshed through the windows,
oozed under doors,
seeped into carpets,
and greased all the floors.
The pigs slipped through fences,
the birds couldn't fly.
the carts overturned,
and horses slid by.
Kids splashed through puddles,
yellow up to their knees.
Buttered-up squirrels
dropped nuts from the trees.
Out in the country,
trains sped off their rails.
Back in the city,
crooks slipped out of jails.
The Mayor of Buttertown,
caught unaware,
slithered and wobbled,
and fell off his chair.
The townfolk erupted
and started to mutter,
"What can we do
to get rid of this butter?"
The Mayor declared,
"It's quite clear to me,
"We must see the wise man
on top of Mount Spree."
They climbed up the mountain,
straight up to the peak,
and waited for hours
to hear the man speak.
They found him asleep.
Not a single hair stirred.
His toothless mouth opened
And out popped one word.
"Popcorn" he said ,
His voice strong and deep.
then pulled up his covers
and went back to sleep.
They popped tons of popcorn.
It soon filled the halls.
Then, working together,
They rolled it in balls.
They pushed popcorn balls
down through the gutter.
and those giant balls
soon soaked up the butter.
They rolled the big balls
right through the town
and into the country
uphill and down.
Piling them up,
they worked through the night,
And when they had finished--
they smiled with delight!
On Buttertown tours
be sure that you see
the great popcorn mountain
right next to Mount Spree.
