A Trip To The End Of The Hall

Grandma and I were playing one night,
back in my bedroom out of Mom's sight.
"I'm chilly" said Grandma "I need a shawl."
So I shared a knit blanket, the pink one that's small.

In rushed my mom, "You should be asleep!
"It's way past your bedtime, so don't make a peep!"
Then she put me in bed, with a kiss said good night,
pulled up my blanket and turned out the light.

Then Mom and my Grandma went out to the hall,
smiling and laughing, they were having a ball!
But I in my bed, with my blanket and doll,
I was not having fun; I was just feeling small.

I didn't feel tired (no book had been read),
and soon a great plan just planned in my head!
This plan was so big, a plan out of sight!
This plan that I planned, I'll do it tonight!

I'll go down the hallway! (In spite of my fright).
I'll see what they're hiding, but stay out of sight.
A silent little trip to the end of the hall,
an invisible quick trip, tonight while I'm small.

Be Quiet
Be Quiet
Be Quiet
Mom had said with a kiss on my cheek.
She didn't say "stay," just "don't make a peep,"
so tonight is the night I'll go seek.

Under my blanket, I'll stay out of sight,
As I carefully crawl to the middle of night.
If I whisper "Be Quiet" with all of my might,
I know I'll stay hidden, and safe from my fright.

Be Quiet
Be Quiet
Be Quiet
As I climb from my bed to the floor.
I'll slip under my blanket, and crawl to the door,
then vanish before I explore!

I know that no one can see me,
when I whisper those two magic words.
Though I can peek out, and I can still see,
I'm invisible and cannot be heard.

Be Quiet
Be Quiet
Be Quiet
When I get there I'll just sit and stare.
To see all the fun while I'm still really young,
no grown up can know that I'm there.

A parade with white horses, all prancing so proud
with jugglers, six in a row.
Brass bands and big crowds (it gets really loud!)
And the queen will be waving, just so.

The fun and the games and the laughter,
the grown ups who never grow old.
Just a peek and I'll see what I'm after,
but to get there I've got to be bold!

Where everyone's happy, and no one is sad,
playtime can last through the night.
The grownups have fun, and no one gets mad,
and everything's cheery and bright.

No one will see as I crawl down the hall,
and silently move 'round the house.
To look for the stuff grownups keep from the small,
I'll creep like a little gray mouse.

Be Quiet
Be Quiet
Be Quiet
I think I can just about see,
It's the den with all of the lights on,
where they're hiding the fun stuff from me.

But wait! That's not right! (do I have enough light?),
my dad is just reading a book!
No horses or crowds at all in my sight,
I must not have known how to look.

I blink, rub my eyes, then blink once again,
and look one more time for the crowds.
Dad's still alone, no band has crept in,
and I still cannot hear any sounds.

Be Quiet
Be Quiet
Be Quiet
I'll crawl to the kitchen and spy.
There's Mom washing dishes, and still cleaning up,
but nothing that's fun finds my eye!

Where are the horses, prancing so proud?
The jugglers six in a row?
Brass bands and the crowds that get really loud?
And the queen who is waving just so?

No band and no crowd with Dad and his book,
in the kitchen, there's no fun at all!
So I'll crawl to the parlor, and have a quick look,
on this trip to the end of the hall.

Grandma is knitting, in her old rocking chair,
(Whatever she's making, it's blue).
And Grandpa's asleep, it's his snore, not a bear,
is this all my grandparents do?

Where's the fun I thought they'd be having?
This scene is too calm to be right!
These grownups are quiet, not laughing,
here deep in the middle of night.

No bears in the parlor, just Grandpa asleep,
as Grandma knits something real small.
Mom is just working, not making a peep,
and Dad is just reading - that's all!

Maybe they knew I was down here,
in this place in the middle of night.
Or maybe I messed up "Be Quiet,"
which I say to stay out of sight.

Oh, there's magic, I just didn't see it.
(The horses, the crowds and the bears).
Some night I know I will find it,
and the grownups will then have to share!

Be Quiet
Be Quiet
Be Quiet
So much for my trip down the hall.
I'll quietly sneak back to bed for some sleep,
and live in my dreams while I'm small.
