The Rainbow Kangaroo

When a little brown mouse
Was locked out of her house
She cried ‘til her eyes were red.

She looked for a friend
Who could help recommend
A place to rest her head.

The lion said, “Roar.
You’re really a bore.”
And he wandered away in the night.

The monkey said, “Eee!
Swing up in the tree.”
And sneered as he swung out of sight.

The spotted giraffe
Just started to laugh
And asked, “Where’d you put your spare key?”

The night owl said, “Fly
Up into the sky.”
And he flapped his wings with glee.

The mouse was sad
And feeling quite bad
That no one would help her get in.

She looked around
But she never found
An animal she could call friend.

Then after a while
She saw the big smile
Of a creature that she’d never seen.

Then mouse told the tale
Of her friendships gone stale
And animals acting quite mean.

The creature smiled wide
And warmed up inside
As she said, “I’m a white kangaroo.

But when I can aid
A creature afraid
Like I will be helpful to you,

My fur goes from white
To rainbows so bright
With sparkles that glitter and glow.

So let me help you
See this night through
And then we will see my rainbow.

Please sleep in my pouch,
As warm as a couch,”
The kangaroo said to the mouse.

“Tomorrow we’ll see
Where you left your key
And get you back into your house.”

As soon as mouse heard
Kangaroo’s friendly word
Her rainbow began to show.

“You have this power too,”
Said the kind kangaroo,
“To make your own glowing rainbow.”

The next day when mouse
Got into her house
She thanked kangaroo with hugs.

And then mouse planned
A party so grand
With food, and warm cider in mugs.

She even invited
Those who had slighted -
Those animals who were so mean.

She forgave them so true.
The rainbow? Hers grew
More lovely than they’d ever seen.
